How to check your Claude usage limit
On claude.ai and in Claude Desktop, open Settings > Usage. Under Plan usage limits, Current session shows how much of your five-hour session limit you've used and the time remaining, and Weekly limits shows when your weekly limit resets, for all models and for Fable if your plan includes it. Verified Ultra accounts don't see a five-hour session limit.
In the Claude mobile apps, Anthropic's Help Center doesn't describe a usage page, so check on claude.ai in a browser or in Claude Desktop. Your limits are shared across your Claude account, so what you use on mobile shows there too.
In Claude Code, type /usage. On a Pro, Max, Ultra, Team or Enterprise plan it shows your plan usage bars and a breakdown of what counts against your plan limits; /cost and /stats open the same screen. The breakdown comes from session history on that machine, so it leaves out claude.ai and other devices. Claude Code also warns you as you approach a limit, and the limit message shows when it resets.
On a usage-based Enterprise plan there are no specific usage limits; Settings > Usage tracks your consumption instead.
One shared limit across claude.ai, Desktop and Claude Code
Anthropic says your usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same usage limit, so it's one pool per account, not a separate allowance per app. On Pro, Max and Ultra, Claude Code in your terminal or in an IDE such as VS Code or JetBrains draws on the same five-hour and weekly limits as Claude; on Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, each member's included usage covers Claude, Cowork and Claude Code.
The exceptions: Claude Code signed in with an API key (Claude Console, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex or Microsoft Foundry) is billed per token to that account and doesn't use your plan's limits, and usage-based Enterprise plans have no per-seat limits and are billed by consumption.
Check and plan around your Claude limits
Open Settings > Usage
On claude.ai, Settings > Usage shows how much of the current five-hour session you've used, the time remaining, and your next weekly reset.
Check from Claude Code
Run /usage in Claude Code for your plan usage bars and a breakdown of what counts against your limits.
Spend less per message
Anthropic's own advice: lower the effort level for routine tasks, turn off extended thinking and tools you don't need, and start a new conversation instead of stretching a long one.
Have Reason ready for when Claude runs out
Sign in to Reason on the web or in the Mac app and connect the other plans you pay for, such as ChatGPT, in Settings › Models, so a task can continue there on a model that still has usage.
Limits by plan
| Plan | Five-hour limit | Weekly limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | A session-based limit that resets every five hours | Anthropic's Help Center doesn't describe a weekly limit for Free |
| Pro | Yes, with more usage per session than Free | One weekly limit across all models |
| Max (5x) | Five times Pro's usage every five hours | Five times Pro's weekly usage, plus a separate weekly limit for Fable |
| Ultra (formerly Max 20x) | None for verified accounts; a temporary limit until verified | Ten times Pro's weekly usage, plus a separate weekly limit for Fable |
| Team, Standard seat | 1.25 times Pro's per-session allowance | A weekly limit across all models, per member |
| Team, Premium seat | 6.25 times Pro's per-session allowance | A weekly limit across all models, per member |
| Enterprise, usage-based | No plan or seat usage limits | No plan or seat usage limits; usage billed at API rates |
| Enterprise, seat-based | Per-seat usage limits apply | Per-seat usage limits apply |
Anthropic describes allowances as multiples of Pro rather than as message counts, and says it may adjust limits to manage capacity. Max 20x is now called Ultra.

How the five-hour window works
The window starts with your first message, not on the clock. If you send a message at 9:10, that session's limit resets in full at 14:10; if you reach it at 11:00, you can use Claude again once it resets. The next window starts with your next message after that.
Every session also counts toward your weekly limit, which can stop you even when the current session still has room.
What uses more of your limit
Anthropic lists the length and complexity of conversations, the features you use, which model you use and the effort level. Tools and connectors are token-intensive, and long conversations that trigger automatic context management use more.
How to avoid hitting the Claude usage limit
Start a new chat instead of stretching one very long thread: each turn re-reads the conversation so far, and long conversations that trigger automatic context management use more of your limit.
Turn off connectors and tools you aren't using. Anthropic says tools and connectors are token-intensive, so turn off connected apps a conversation doesn't need, and ask Claude not to search the web when you don't need current information.
Use a lighter model than Opus for simple tasks. Opus costs several times more per turn than Sonnet, and Sonnet more than Haiku, so save Opus for hard problems.
Turn on usage credits as overflow if your plan offers them. On Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, usage credits keep you working past your plan's limits at standard API rates, up to the monthly spend limit you set in Settings > Usage.
Hit your limit? Reason keeps going on your other connected accounts or Reason credits.
Questions
How do I check my Claude usage limit?
On claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Settings > Usage: Current session shows how much of your five-hour limit you've used and the time remaining, and Weekly limits shows when your weekly limit resets. In Claude Code, type /usage to see your plan usage bars. Anthropic doesn't describe a usage page in the Claude mobile apps, so check on the web or in Claude Desktop.
Do Claude Code and claude.ai share the same limit?
Yes, on a Claude subscription. Anthropic says usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limits, so work in one leaves less for the others. Claude Code signed in with an API key is billed per token instead and doesn't use your plan's limits.
Is there a limit on how much I can use Claude?
Yes. Every Claude plan has usage limits: paid plans have a session limit that resets five hours after your first message and weekly limits, and Anthropic may adjust limits to manage capacity. Usage-based Enterprise plans have no plan or seat limits and are billed by consumption.
What is the daily usage limit for Claude?
There is no daily cap. Paid plans have a five-hour session limit plus weekly limits, and usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limits.
How to avoid Claude usage limit?
Start new chats instead of very long threads, turn off connectors and tools you aren't using, and use Sonnet or Haiku instead of Opus for simple tasks. If your plan offers usage credits, turn them on to keep working past the limit at API rates.
What is the 5 hour limit on Claude?
It's the session limit on Claude plans: the five-hour period starts when you send your first message, and the limit resets in full five hours later. Verified Ultra accounts don't have a five-hour limit.
Is the Claude 5-hour limit rolling?
Anthropic's help center says the five-hour period starts when you send your first message and the limit resets in full five hours later. Settings > Usage shows the time remaining in the current session.
Does Claude Code have its own limit?
No. Claude Code shares the same five-hour and weekly limits as claude.ai and Claude Desktop on your plan.
Which plan has no five-hour limit?
Ultra, for verified accounts. Usage-based Enterprise plans have no plan or seat usage limits and bill usage at API rates.
What happened to Max 20x?
Anthropic renamed it Ultra. Existing Max 20x subscribers moved to Ultra automatically with no price change.
